I am a Med-Peds hospitalist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and University of Cincinnati Medical Center. I spend most of my time on teaching teams with residents and medical students in both the adult and pediatric inpatient setting, but I also love when I get to work on our Hospital Medicine Adult Care service at Cincy Children’s where we provide consultative care for adults with congenital or childhood illnesses that are admitted to our subspecialty services. “Variety is the spice of life” when it comes to being a Med-Peds hospitalist!

My time as a member of the I-PASS Study Group has been incredibly impactful during my career. The study team is a wonderfully talented, cohesive, and supportive network that truly believes in the mission of using various initiatives (e.g. handoffs and patient/family-centered rounds) to improve the safety and experience for patients admitted to the hospital and their families. I also love being a residency program director! Having the ability to mentor, coach, and teach the next generation gives me an immense sense of purpose and fills my work life with joy. Lastly, being part of the ADVANCE PHM steering committee has really opened my eyes to advocacy and how to promote equity for women in medicine. There is so much opportunity for PHM to lead the way in gender equity and advancement of women in medicine – it is imperative our field steps up to the plate! I look forward to pushing the mission and vision of ADVANCE forward with the help of other advocates and allies for years to come.

I would not be where I am today without the mentorship and sponsorship of many individuals during my career! My senior mentors and sponsors have not only provided useful advice, but they have also used their position and influence to create opportunities or advocate on my behalf. My peer mentors have also been instrumental to my success and wellbeing. Having peer mentors who can serve as a sounding board, dimmish self-doubt/imposter syndrome, dry up some tears, and give you that little extra push when you needed it has been life-changing for me! I want to encourage all women in medicine to make sure you have those crucial peer mentors that will push you, but also sponsors that will use their influence on your behalf! “Women tend to be over mentored and under sponsored in medicine.”
